The Sober Metalhead
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Why did you start this podcast? The short version? I wanted to try new NA beers and find new bands to listen to. I thought that this would be a great way to get people interested in one (or both). It also forces me to step outside my comfort zone and listen to new stuff.
2. Why not NA wine and NA spirits? Well, it's funny. I tried an NA spirit that was supposed to be like Fireball. The problem is, it was TOO good. I ended up finishing the bottle and immediately seeking out more. With beer, I can have one or two and be done. There have been times that I've finished a 6-pack in one sitting, but that's because I like the taste, not because I'm trying to get drunk. As far as NA wine, I'm not a huge fan of wine. I used to drink it to get drunk, but didn't really appreciate the flavor. Once I run out of beers to drink (if that ever happens), I'll probably incorporate some other kinds of drinks. I'm thinking the hop-waters, cannabis-infused drinks, etc.
3. What makes you choose the albums you do? First, it's random off of Encyclopedia Metallum (metal-archives.com). From there, the band has to have less than 1,000 monthly listeners (I prefer those with less than a hundred). I have to be able to find them on Spotify, because I'm not scouring the internet to listen to albums. There have been a few bands that I've been curious about and decided to do them on the podcast, rather than listening to them on my own.
4. Why don't you have a Patreon? Well, I did...for a hot second. Plus, I really don't have anything to offer people. On top of that, I actually felt guilty about charging for something that I'm willing to do for free. I literally pay to host the podcast and that's less than a lot of other things that I pay for. So, why not just have fun and share this with people. If you have any suggestions of things you'd want on a Patreon, I can see about re-starting it. Otherwise, I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing.
5. Are you willing to take sponsorships? Absolutely not. I will (and have) recommended products and services that I have used (like ProofNoMore), but I am not paid nor do I want to be paid. If I tell you about something, it's because I've used it. Not because they're paying me to talk about it.
6. Why not focused on AA? Because AA is one of many sobriety avenues out there. I don't want to force someone to go down that road. You can do SMART Recovery, AA, or any other number of places out there. I will say that I raw-dogged getting sober from alcohol and I struggled with it for a LONG time. I don't recommend that avenue. Find a group you like and stick with it. Personally, I try to stay away from the ones focused on deities, but with another addiction, I was able to substitute something else for my "higher power."
7. Why don't you have guests on the show? Because I'm autistic, socially awkward, and have a really weird work schedule.
8. Why don't you play music from the bands you're reviewing? Because that's illegal! I really don't want to hunt these people down and possibly have to send a bunch of e-mails to play snippets from small bands. It's freely available on Spotify. You're probably on your phone anyway...just pull them up and listen!
